1 of 1 of ? (2024) presents the same image through two different claims of scarcity: a unique work and an open edition. The related Proof of Work connects the number of editions with the physical act of signing.
One image, different editions
The 21 May 2024 release thread announces a 24-hour open edition and the unique work’s Sotheby’s auction for the following day. A later post that day confirms the open edition is open. Sotheby’s catalogue separately documents the unique inscription and related project.
The image can remain the same while the terms of issuance differ. Scarcity belongs to the record and release structure, not to an inability to reproduce the picture.

Counting and signing
The initial statement promises a hand-drawn signature for each open edition, on a physical ink-on-Tyvek work. On 28 May, Butcher reports that the 35,262 signatures had been completed. He describes the repeated work as a test of the perceived relation between physical effort and value.
The count is now documented as a contemporaneous artist report. It is not presented as an independently audited ledger. The participant’s choice affects the edition count under the release rules; it does not make the unique image visually different.

What the dates establish
The posts distinguish a release announcement, confirmation of opening and a later completion report. They do not resolve the conflicting inscription dates within Sotheby’s catalogue. The timestamp of an announcement is not automatically the creation timestamp of the inscription.
