When a decision changes the work

What happens when an audience does more than interpret an artwork—when its decisions change what remains?

That question offers one route through Checks, Opepen and Self Checkout. The comparisons below are editorial readings of shared problems and differences. Documented references are identified separately; resemblance alone does not establish influence.

A precedent the artist named

On 7 January 2023, while developing Checks, Butcher identified Damien Hirst’s The Currency as a precedent worth recognizing. His thread also corrected an initial numerical claim; the preserved record includes that correction.

The Currency paired physical works with digital tokens and asked owners to choose which form to keep. Checks developed a different choice: preserve a work or combine tokens to produce another composition. In each case, a decision changes what survives. Butcher explicitly said that his reference did not describe what Checks would do. This is a documented acknowledgment, not evidence that the projects share the same rules or aims.

Instructions and their realization

Conceptual art makes room for a work to reside partly in a proposition or procedure. SFMOMA describes Sol LeWitt’s wall drawings as instructions realized by other people, whose decisions can produce different results. In Wall Drawing 273 (1975), a rule establishes a field of possible drawings without fixing every line in advance.

This helps articulate a question within Checks: what belongs to the rule, and what belongs to the person acting on it? The difference matters too. A collector does not interpret a written drawing instruction freely. Software restricts the available operations, and combining works permanently changes the surviving token supply. The comparison concerns the distribution of decisions, not a shared aesthetic or a documented debt to LeWitt.

Participation and its limits

Learning to Love You More (2002–2009), by Harrell Fletcher and Miranda July with web designer Yuri Ono, invited people to respond to assignments and contribute reports to a website. The accumulating submissions were part of the work. SFMOMA preserves the project as an archive.

The connection to Opepen lies in the relation between a framework and what other people contribute. The difference is access and authority: Opepen’s release choices are made by eligible token holders within a defined allocation system. A threshold among holders is not the same as public consensus.

Self Checkout makes another boundary visible. A participant chooses how much to contribute, changing a receipt and the collective balance, while the artist establishes the relation between money and printed length. Participation shares some decisions; it does not erase authorship or economic differences.

Verification, scarcity and judgment

A record can verify that a transaction occurred without proving that an artwork is good, important or true. Checks makes that distinction useful: the same symbol can suggest identity, paid status or approval, while a blockchain records ownership and permitted changes.

Scarcity is similarly distinct from significance. Combining Checks changes how many works survive. That is observable within the system. Whether the resulting work deserves greater attention remains a judgment. A low edition number cannot make that judgment on a viewer’s behalf.

Checks Elements brings the question into printmaking: how does a digital record relate to a particular physical object? Its pairing of a print and a token invites comparison between two kinds of record, without making them identical.

Network culture as material

Internet art can depend on connections and exchanges, rather than merely being an image shown on a screen. The relevant test is practical: would the work function the same way without the network? Collector choices in Checks, the release process in Opepen and remote orders entering Self Checkout’s physical installation each give a different answer.

Some references are explicitly documented. A 2023 guide to Opepen reproduces Butcher’s acknowledgment of batz and Scapes. Those stated references should be kept distinct from the comparisons in this essay. Familiarity of form is not, by itself, evidence of historical influence.
